MEMBERSHIP GUIDELINES

ATTENDANCE

It will be expected that all players committed in writing to a specific concert season, will be present at ALL rehearsals. If absolutely necessary, ONE rehearsal can be missed as long as there is a qualified substitute* provided. If it is necessary for a player to miss more than one rehearsal, a PERMANENT replacement may be made for that concert from available personnel.

A.  If at any rehearsal there are any missing players, the rehearsal may be terminated by the conductor, and the opportunity for sectional rehearsals can be initiated for the remainder of the rehearsal time.

B.  Sectionals will be lead by a designated section leader.

C. For absences, please contact Wendy Schuh as soon as possible to get an early start on finding an approved substitute during your absence. As a courtesy, you may also notify the artistic director Jerry Luckhardt.

*Qualified Substitute - Preferences will be to have auditioned players as substitutes; however, at the discretion of the conductor, non-auditioned players may be asked to play for a rehearsal or performance.

PUNCTUALITY

Professional courtesy requires a 20-minute call time prior to rehearsals and performances. It will be expected that ALL players will be prepared and ready to start at the designated start time (warmed, and in place). The policy for punctuality will be the same as letter I.A above. Should any player fail to acknowledge the punctuality standard, the situation will be dealt with on an individual basis as follows:

A.  Upon the first offense, section leaders will be responsible for speaking to the player who fails to arrive at the designated call time.

B.  The second offense will result in the player's dismissal by the personnel manager.

AUDITIONS

All players will be auditioned and/or interviewed before gaining membership into the group. This can be done by individual appointment with the audition committee during the designated audition time period. These auditions will be advertised throughout the metropolitan and surrounding areas. Auditions are usually "blind" (behind a screen).

A.  Audition materials will consist of two short pieces of contrasting style to be selected by the auditioner.

B.  Audition applicants will also be asked to fill out a background questionnaire.

MEMBERSHIP DUES

Core members are encouraged to contribute a minimum of $75.00 to the organization. Contributions by substitute players are welcomed, and additional contributions are also encouraged. Encore relies on payments of dues, memberships, grants from foundations and ticket sales for its income, which covers the costs of promotions, concert venue rental and artistic personnel.

ARTISTIC QUALITY

Core members may be replaced at the discretion of the Encore Wind Ensemble Artistic Director based on lack of compliance with the above-mentioned guidelines in combination with additional artistic considerations in accordance with the mission of Encore Wind Ensemble.
